ESWL (Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy)
ESWL is a non-invasive treatment method for renal stones. The patient can usually be treated on an outpatient basis and with little or no sedation. By applying acoustic shock waves to the stone with short impulses of high intensity, the stone gradually begins to desintegrate.
Technically the treatment is based on shock waves, that are produced in a liquid filled generator. The energy is then focused in one point – the focal point. The shock waves are transported through the liquid – through the tissue to the focal point, where the stone is located. The stone fragments are subsequently washed out with the urine.
It is the stones’ character, location, size and number that determines the need for one or more treatments.
Which equipment do we use?
We use one of the most modern and versatile lithotripters on the market today, the Storz Modulith® SLK. The therapy head is mounted on a flexible arm allowing numerous treatment options. Modulith® SLK is equipped with a patented inline ultrasound system integrated in the therapy head. Furthermore the lithotripter has a system integrated C-arm. Storz Medical’s “Lithotrack Positioning System” assists in the localisation of the stone.
